Disegno in Orvieto

Date /

March 2023

This drawing was created during a semester abroad in Orvieto, Italy. Here, each class was a month-long session, allowing for an all-encompassing focus on a single subject or medium. For the first month, ‘Disegno’ was the introductory course. At this time, traditional drawing studies were created to strengthen skills using charcoal and conte crayons.
Still life drawings and object studies led up to a large-scale final. We were to go into the town of Orvieto and choose one specific location and layout to complete a mostly on-site drawing. My location was a small alleyway off the main corso that housed a few restaurants and storefronts. It was a good challenge for me to overcome nerves that were reveled as I began to sketch in a public place. People were constantly walking by and observing me work. I slowly became more comfortable both with the on site process and with paserby observers.

This process, using mainly conte crayon and stick charcoal for more mass dominant areas, grew my drawing skills tremendously. I found myself becoming more comfortable drawing with less of a fear of failing. My skills in capturing perspective, depth, detail, light and dark were pushed and strengthened.
